27a - reading reflection 3

The book I chose for my final reading reflection is Makers: The New Industrial Revolution written by Chris Anderson. The general theme of the book is that we are heading through the 3rd industrial revolution in society, but this time it involves digital manufacturing. In essence, robots and AI machinery are the centerpiece of this revolution because they are cheaper, work nonstop, have an endless supply of workers and have no human error associated with them.

This book connected with this class because when starting a business one of the things that is brought up that is valuable to a business is human capital. While there will be a human who starts the business and will be working behind the curtain while the machines work (at least for now) replacing workers with machines could really impact the landscape of business.

An assignment we can do for this class is have a short opinionated paper where the students voice their opinion as to whether they support or are against the implementation of AI and robots in the workforce.

I didn’t realize how big the plans are for AI and machinery. As a normal consumer you don’t realize how much involvement machines already play in operating society. Additionally the fact that they will become even involved in the future can be a little concerning as who knows how advanced these machines will get. I’m not saying everything will end up like Terminator, but I feel as though a lot of people's jobs will be at stake and society will become completely digitized.

  1. Thanks for sharing Marcus. While I didn’t get to read it, this book and concept is interesting and valuable for anyone looking to start a business in the near future. AI in the workplace solves a lot of human labor problems but also creates a lot of issues related to skilled and unskilled work and employment. It will be interesting to see what develops over the next decade and how quickly these technologies advance.

  2. Hi Marcus, great post! I did not get to read this book, but now I want to as I find this topic very interesting. I definitely agree that robots and AI are going to play a huge factor in businesses of the future. Something I like to consider when I think about this topic is how this will affect my value in the job market. I can learn how to pivot my skills to something that is irreplaceable by a robot.
