The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users, Guy Kawasaki - Reading Reflection
The general theme of the book is how people can use social media to their advantage as a way to better promote yourself and your business. Throughout the book there are a lot of helpful tips identifying these that should and should not be done when creating, expanding and promoting a business through social media. Social media could be one of the most important marketing tools because of its ability to connect with people, but making mistakes could also be costly toward you/your company's brand.
This book is related to ENT3003 because it stresses the importance of connecting with your followers. This is similar to the ideas in this class because in ENT3003 we had a lot of assignments where we needed to go and actually connect in person with our target market. Obviously social media would be doing this digitally, but it could also allow someone to get the thoughts of many more people in their market, let alone just finding people that are interested in your product/business.
An assignment I would create based on this book for this class would be for students to use what they learned in the book to create a fake social media page or an outline for how they would structure their social media page. For the students who actually make a real account and post the link or their handle, then they can receive extra credit.
The aha moment I had when reading the book was just how important social media can be in a businesses success or failure. As a social media user, a lot of the time I just scroll through and only briefly glance at everything. But for the posts that are able to grab my attention, that could turn into me liking, sharing, reposting and telling other people about what I just saw. I could notify hundreds of people instantly about the information I see and those hundred people could notify thousands more. That is why the information a business posts is so critical. If the post receives positive feedback, that positive feedback could reach millions and do wonders for a brand, but if it's bad that negative post could also reach millions and really hurt a brand’s image.
Hello Marcus,
ReplyDeleteI also chose to read this book. I thought it would be very helpful for the class specifically but in life in general. Building your brand as an entrepreneur is critical and in today’s world, social media plays a big role in the brand. Like you mentioned, so many people can see your page and negative post can really bring down a company so learning how to be professional on social media is very important.
Hi Marcus, great post! I also read the Art of Social Media. I think your aha moment when reading this book was interesting, specifically the part about positive versus negative feedback. As a marketing major, I hear so much about how beneficial earned media can be, and part of that is being able to effectively engage with your potential customers. Being aware of the nature of your content, and wanting it to be engaging, can be an advantage for you when developing your business.
ReplyDeleteHello Marcus, great post! I was interested in reading this book as well and your review piqued my interest again. Your class assignment would fit right into this course and would be a great creative outlet as well. Social media plays such an important role in both personal and professional branding and this book is a valuable read for any young professional.
