Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Hypothesis/Opportunity:

Current razors are unable to remain durable for extended periods of time because there are no simple means of resharpening blades and keeping them clean.

The Who, What Why:

Who: People who shave
What: Razors are not very durable and become dull and dirty really fast
Why: It forces people to continuously buy new blades/razors

Interview 1:

‘The majority of the people who shave would have this problem. For people who don’t shave, this wouldn’t really be an issue because they would likely not have a need for a razor in the first place.’

‘I feel like the blade sharpening aspect is better than the cleaning aspect. With proper care techniques, there are ways to keep a razor clean but it’s much harder to keep blades sharp’

‘For those that do shave, it could become a hassle to have to keep spending money on new razors. Some people may prefer having a new razor all the time, but I personally would rather keep the same one if it is still in a usable condition.’

Interview 2:

‘I feel like adult men would have the problem more than women. Most shaving products are targeted toward men because they grow facial hair faster than women in most cases.’

‘For those who do shave often, I assume it would need to work on all different kinds of blades/razor brands for the product to do well’

‘Having to buy new razors does not really bother me because I let my facial hair grow out. However, I can see how this could be an issue for some people’

Interview 3:

‘I feel like middle aged/older people may have this problem more. I know for work my dad needs to be clean shaven, but my brother who is a senior rarely shaves because he likes to grow it out and doesn’t need to shave it for anything’.

‘When I shave I use the cheap disposable razors because I shave pretty frequently and I don’t like reusing the same razor, but it's just my personal preference. I feel like having to shave in general is the issue more than the lack of durable razors’.

‘My dad is always buying new razors because of how frequently he shaves with high quality razors, so I agree for some people that cannot afford new razors all the time it could be an issue.’.

Interview 4:

‘I know I definitely have this problem. I hate body hair but I can’t stand having to buy new razors all the time. I imagine other women and anyone who shaves would feel the same way’.

‘I have an issue with the durability and dirtiness aspect. I really just want to shave as quickly and as painlessly as possible so anyway that can happen, I am all for it’.

‘I very rarely have the time, money or the memory to buy new razors. I don’t have a car so I don’t do many grocery runs and I’ll either forget to buy a new razor or I remember and I just don’t want to spend the money’.

Interview 5:
‘I don’t think that many people have this issue because I have never heard anyone actually complain about it, but I supposed it would be for men and women’.

‘I think the issue has more to do with shaving than anything. From what I’ve heard, people shave because they are expected to appear a certain way but that shouldn’t be the case.

‘If someone actually wants to shave, then I don’t think they should have any issue with buying new equipment when needed. If it becomes too expensive or too time consuming to shop for one, then you could always buy a cheap one or order razors online’.

Summary of Findings:

From interviews I found that women have the problem just as much as men and that people are more upset with the durability of blades, but they prefer clean razors as well. It seems like cost is the main issue associated with the why as well so whatever product that solves the problem would also need to be affordable for all classes.

  1. Hi Marcus, great post! I think it is great that your interviews pointed out that women have the same problem just as much as men – I definitely agree with this conclusion. I also think that recognizing that women have this need for higher quality razors as well expands your opportunity belief. Because more people have the need for your opportunity, this will expand your number of potential prototypical customers.

  2. Hi Marcus, I really enjoyed reading this post regarding the durability of razors. I do agree, that a big problem with these razors is that they are not durable, so the issue arises with regards to having to buy new ones very often. I believe that the durability along with the cleanliness of the razor are equally important. As for your realization that women have this issue with razors as much as men do, I find this very interesting, as this would signify more potential for different target audiences.

  3. This was a really thorough write up Marcus! I appreciated the specific quotes you put from your interviews. I used to use disposable razor blades and definitely found frustration in how quickly razors dull and how expensive replacement blades could be. While I use an electric razor now and don’t have this issue as much, the number of people who use disposable blades is still high and definitely presents an opportunity.

  4. Hey Marcus, I enjoyed reading this post and I actually remember reading this earlier because i really like you opportunity even though it was specially more geared towards men. On of my pet peeves is the undurablenessn of my razors and having to keep buying more because they break. However I do disagree with the interview 2 because I feel like women have more places to shave like literally often the whole body. I like how in your summary you said its a men and women problem.
